President Obama rejected tax cuts to businesses as major parts of the 2009 stimulus, but as the election draws near, he see the need for private sector stimulus. Voters have figured out that government spending will not lead us out of recession, so the political class will finally give the private sector a chance! R&D tax credits are a good start. Let’s hope he is finally learning to trust the private sector.

LA Times did research on the value added by teachers in the classroom. Everyone agrees test scores are not the sole indicator of a teachers effectiveness. When included as part of an overall evaluation, mentoring, and coaching, measurements such as these can help teachers improve their classroom effectiveness.

See the article here.

What we measure in our education system matters. For too long, the discussion in Minnesota has been about money. If we only measure how much we spend, we won’t know if we are spending effectively. It is time to measure effectiveness in curricula, techniques, and teachers performance so that successes can be shared with parents and other school districts.

Why? Private wages and salaries fell.

This recovery is not going to firm up until the private sector starts growing. Businesses face increasing regulation and taxes. Instead of spending time and money on growing their business, they are meeting the demands of an ever expanding, increasingly demanding government.

Tax cuts to stimulate the economy worked in the 60′s and 80′s. The last thing we need in a weak recovery is a tax increase.

Today’s Wall Street Journal has a report from the President’s 1963 report on the economy.

Tax reduction thus sets off a process that can bring gains for everyone, gains won by marshalling resources that would otherwise stand idle—workers without jobs and farm and factory capacity without markets. Yet many taxpayers seemed prepared to deny the nation the fruits of tax reduction because they question the financial soundness of reducing taxes when the federal budget is already in deficit. Let me make clear why, in today’s economy, fiscal prudence and responsibility call for tax reduction even if it temporarily enlarged the federal deficit—why reducing taxes is the best way open to us to increase revenues.
