Senator Michelle Benson Responds to US Supreme Court’s Obama Care Ruling

St. Paul- The Affordable Care Act, including its individual mandate that virtually all Americans buy health insurance, was upheld by the Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote Thursday. Although the individual mandate was not withheld under the commerce clause, it was ruled constitutional based on Congress’s power to tax. Senator Michelle Benson (R-Ham Lake) made the following statement regarding today’s Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act. “While the Supreme Court decision today upholds the Affordable Care Act, it reiterates what we’ve known all along: Obamacare is a tax on hardworking Americans. The Congressional Budget Office cost projections show the cost over the next 10 years is upwards of $12,000 per taxpayer. This is unacceptable as families and small businesses – the economic engines of our communities –struggle to make ends meet,” said Senator Benson. In Minnesota, Governor Dayton has already spent roughly $30 million on the planning, IT and infrastructure to set up the health insurance exchange in compliance with the ACA. In that process, Senator Benson has continually reached out to the Governor’s administration to get information on the cost and implementation of the exchange in Minnesota. “Despite repeated attempts on my part to get information, the Governor’s administration has failed to provide sufficient responses to convince me this is the right path forward for Minnesota. In my capacity as a legislator, I refuse to sit back and allow government overreach into our private lives and health care decisions. As a good steward of tax payer dollars, I will continue to pursue an affordable, portable and private Minnesota health care solution,” concluded Senator Benson.

The private sector added 218,000 jobs in April, but only 41,000 in May.

Total government employment is up 390,000 jobs thanks to temporary census jobs, but construction lost 35,000 jobs in May.

The private sector needs confidence that the recession is over before they will invest in new hires. With tax cuts expiring for small business owners and uncertainty about the direction of the government, businesses will likely hold off a little longer before resuming hiring. Just my opinion.
